The founder

Pieter van der Does and Arnout Schuijff first worked together at e-commerce payments firm Bibit, which they helped build before its acquisition by Royal Bank of Scotland in 2004. They founded Adyen in 2006 to build payments infrastructure from scratch, targeting large global merchants like Uber, Spotify, Netflix and Airbnb directly rather than through resellers. Van der Does remained CEO; Schuijff was CTO until leaving in 2020 to found payments startup Tebi.

How it was taken public

Adyen listed on Euronext Amsterdam on June 13, 2018, priced at €240 a share for a €7.1 billion valuation; shares nearly doubled on debut day to roughly €455, implying a valuation closer to €13.4 billion (~$15.8B). Already solidly profitable at listing — unlike many fintechs — Adyen’s IPO was one of the largest and best-received European tech listings of 2018.
