Founder convicted 2024 · sentence commuted 2025
Ozy Media
A digital media company whose founder was convicted of defrauding investors and lenders by misrepresenting its finances, in a case that turned on an impersonated phone call.
What happened
Ozy Media was a digital media business that raised substantially from investors on the strength of its audience and commercial position.
In July 2024 its co-founder Carlos Watson was convicted of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, in a case centred on misrepresentations to investors and lenders about the company's finances. He was sentenced to 116 months — nearly ten years.
In March 2025, hours before he was due to report to prison, his sentence was commuted by President Trump. Reporting noted that the commutation also removed a restitution and forfeiture obligation reported at $96m.
The detail that made the case notorious was a call in which a company representative impersonated a media executive to reassure a prospective investor. It is an unusually literal example of a reference check being defeated.
Visible at the time
What an investor could have seen
These are things that were observable before the collapse, not hindsight dressed as foresight. Some failures genuinely could not be seen coming; where that is the case, this section says so rather than inventing a warning.
- Audience and engagement figures that could not be reconciled against independent measurement.
- Commercial relationships described in terms the counterparties did not confirm independently.
- A reference contact supplied and arranged by the company rather than reached independently.
- Reporting by journalists raising questions before investors acted on them.
For your own diligence
What to do differently
- Reach references yourself, on contact details you found rather than ones you were given. This case is the reason that instruction is not paranoia: a call arranged by the company was not what it appeared to be.
- Verify commercial relationships with the counterparty. If a company describes a partnership that is material to your investment, a short call or email to the named partner is proportionate and is rarely done.
- Where independent measurement of a metric exists — as it does for media audiences — use it rather than the company's own figures.
- Take journalism seriously as a diligence input. In several cases on this page, reporters raised the substantive questions well before investors acted.
