The founder
Sergio Fogel, a Universidad ORT alum, co-founded dLocal in 2016 with Sebastián Kanovich and Andrés Bzurovski — former colleagues at payments company AstroPay — building a cross-border payments platform for emerging markets that serves clients including Amazon and Netflix. Fogel became one of Uruguay’s first two billionaires (alongside Bzurovski) upon the IPO.
How it was taken public
dLocal listed on Nasdaq on June 3, 2021, pricing above its range at $21 a share and raising roughly $617 million at a valuation near $6 billion, which rose to about $9 billion on its trading debut — coming just nine months after the company became Uruguay’s first unicorn.
